Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a coaching session and a therapy session?

Coaching is for the individual who is starting to question his/her purpose.  You may be asking, who am I?  What am I doing here?  How am I bringing my gifts to the world?  You may be contemplating if the daily grind is all there is to life.  Coaching is for the seeker who is ready to grow and expand.  If you are feeling overwhelmed, confused, bored, or lost and have an inner sense that there is more to life than how you are living it, coaching may be for you.

Therapy addresses psychological issues and emotions that may not be conscious. Sometimes, long-standing blockages (anxiety, depression, low self-esteem) are impending our growth and capacity for love, intimacy, calm, and joy.  Therapy addresses these old patterns or belief systems and brings them into awareness.  Much of the healing comes from internal/emotional shifts in perspective that are then able to positively effect behavioral shifts.

I don’t want to be in therapy forever, how long does it last?  Therapy lasts as long as you would like it to.  I approach therapy much like teaching.  I simplify important concepts and truths that apply to you specifically so that you can learn to understand and trust yourself on a deeper level.  As you integrate the connection between your mind (thoughts, logic) and heart (emotions, intuition) with more clarity, you will feel more empowered to trust yourself, your responses, and your behaviors.  This can happen as quickly as you are willing to recognize that power within yourself.

What is your style or approach?  I take a holistic perspective that takes into account physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of your self.   My approach is collaborative, interactive, and experiential.  I am solution-focused and take into account cognitive-behavioral dynamics.  I hold you accountable for your part in your own life which fosters confidence, responsibility, and empowerment.  The process is very organic in that your personal needs, style, pace, and capabilities are taken into account to create the ideal path to wellness.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?  I genuinely believe that you will know within the first session if we are a good fit together.  If you (or I) decide that we are not a good fit, I will make recommendations for another therapist that may better suit your style or needs.

How do you work through your own issues?  This is a fantastic question for therapists and coaches.  I strongly believe that if you are going to be in the therapist/coach’s chair, you must have experienced it yourself.

I have been in therapy as a child, a teenager, and as an adult.   I have spent years participating in group work.  Now, when I need help, I look to family, my relationship, trusted professionals (acupuncturist, therapist, energy workers), books, and most importantly, myself.  Having developed a deep, connected relationship to myself and to a higher power, the first place I go for help is within.  It is my goal to help you make yourself the safest, most trusted place to go for help.

Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider.  You may be eligible for reimbursement, depending on your coverage.  Please check with your health care provider to see if you are covered for out-of-network mental health.  The questions to ask your provider are:

  1. Do I have out-of-network mental health coverage?
  2. Do I need pre-approval or pre-authorization?
  3. At what rate will I be reimbursed?
  4. Is there a deductible?
